ClaimLimit is a reference project built around one practical problem: before you can file a small claims case, you have to know two things — the dollar limit in your state and the fee to open the case. Those numbers are set state by state, published across dozens of different court websites, and they move whenever a legislature amends its court rules. We collect them into one plain table with the source statute for each state, so you can answer the question in a minute instead of an afternoon.

The tables are compiled from state court rules and statutes and reviewed on a rolling basis. When a legislature changes a limit or a fee schedule, we update the affected state on the next review cycle. Our editorial standard is simple: every figure links to or cites the rule it came from, and we would rather show a range with a caveat than a false precision we cannot defend.

We are not a court, a clerk’s office, or a government agency, and we do not give legal advice. The site exists to help you walk into the right court, for the right amount, the first time — but for anything that turns on your specific facts, the local court clerk or a qualified attorney is the authority.
